Contact Sign (CS)

Contact Sign is a form of communication that combines elements of both sign language and spoken language, often used by deaf and hearing individuals in contact with each other. It is not a standardized language but rather a fluid, improvised system that varies depending on the users and their language backgrounds. Contact Sign typically incorporates features of the local sign language, such as American Sign Language (ASL), along with elements of the spoken language, such as English. This form of communication allows for more effective interaction between deaf and hearing individuals who may not be fluent in each other’s primary language. Contact Sign can bridge the gap between American Sign Language (ASL) users and non-ASL users, allowing for smoother communication with deaf colleagues. Contact Sign incorporates elements of both ASL and English, making it more accessible for those who may not be fluent in ASL. By using Contact Sign, hearing individuals can better understand and engage with their deaf coworkers, fostering a more inclusive work environment.
